Haven’t seen it yet, but your thoughts remind me of Blood Meridian, one of my favourite novels (another McCarthy like No Country). Maybe that nihilistic dark tone translates better on the page than screen where not rooting for anyone, and everyone’s a shade of “bad” is harder in a movie cause we’re conditioned to expect at least one protagonist to root for?

I think No Country translated well to the screen. And Burn After Reading is filled with unlikable idiots but I think it’s hilarious. This movie at least had the teenager I could root for, but overall, there wasn’t enough comedy or on-screen gravitas and fascination to offset the unlikability of...
