The SNP-led Glasgow City Council is plotting to "fire and rehire" staff members if they refuse to take a wage cut proposed in a bid to strike an equal pay settlement. The local authority has been dealing with the scandal where some female workers were paid less than their male counterparts for years. And now it has outlined how it plans to bring practices in line, but it includes 11% of workers losing money. The offer will see 63% gain cash, while 26% will see little or no change. The City Administration Committee will discuss this on Thursday, but it is being supported by the SNP administration. Trade unions will decide whether to strike or not on this plan which is intended to guarantee equal pay for work of equal value across the workforce, and the council says it will reduce its overall gender pay gap from 2.6% to -0.5%, based on independent modelling. It will cost £82.5 million, made up of £65.4m in 2027/28, £16.5m in 2028/29, and a smaller remaining amount the following year.
