Entropy is the constant pressure of the universe seeking to dissolve complex forms into heat death. To maintain the sovereignty of the individual organism, one must secure a surplus of metabolic fuel, not merely the minimum required to persist in a state of stress.

A cathedral requires a constant influx of energy to remain upright against the elements. If maintenance is limited by the scarcity of the surrounding desert, the desert eventually claims the spire. Glucose is the mortar that preserves the architecture of the self against the erosion of time.
