🇵🇰🇨🇳80% of Pakistan’s imported weapons are Chinese. Now so are its army chats
The Pakistan Army has directed its officers and soldiers to stop using Meta-owned WhatsApp for official communication and shift to China's WeChat, citing security concerns over surveillance, data leaks, and hacking of official conversations.
Pakistan is making a complete digital ecosystem transfer from Western technologies, not only because of the security, surveillance and distrust issues in the WhatsApp; but also a handover of military communications, cybersecurity and intelligence security details to the Chinese giant.
Pakistan is already extremely dependent on China:👇
▪️ 80% of its weapons from China, with arms imports rising 66% between 2021-25
▪️ JF-17 Thunder fighter jet, jointly produced by Pakistan and China, with Pakistan currently manufacturing the airframe (58% of production) and China supplying avionics (42%)
▪️It also operates approximately 20 of the 36 J-10CE fighter jets ordered from China in 2020, with deliveries of the remaining 16 units temporarily halted.
▪️Bilateral trade reached approximately $2.84 billion in Pakistan's exports to China in 2025
▪️Pakistan's imports from China in sectors like electrical machinery, machinery, vehicles, and organic chemicals exceeded $11 billion
👉 Standardising military communications on WeChat can significantly accelerate the pace of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor and broader Belt and Road Initiative projects, as the unified, secure platform enables seamless, real-time coordination for joint security, logistics, and infrastructure operations along the route.
