I can see how gaining followers for your pubkey could be a powerful motivating force.
The problem is that pubkeys on Nostr are too insecure. There is too great a likelihood that your pubkey will be compromised over the years. Loss of a pubkey means that you have to rebuild your following manually, so there isn't enough incentive to invest serious effort in building very large followings.
