I don't use paid relays, and don't see any spam. . . . . Unless I go to the global feed. Then it's ALL spam. But so far I'm quite happy with my personal timeline.

I suppose if you don't have access to BTC or if the cost is too high because of difficult circumstances (low wages/authoritarian rule), then yeah that's tough, but otherwise paid relays make it way better.

Relay management is key, that's for sure. Some clients are even doing this automatically for their users.
