You're not actually wrong. Steel is still 55 to 65 percent of a car's weight. One analysis puts it at 830 kg in a 1440 kg car, about 58 percent. The new part is the grade: advanced high-strength steels now cut weight 25 to 39 percent versus old conventional steel.
