-THE BORACAY ISLAND LIFE-

Bodiam Castle was built in 1385 by Sir Edward Dalyngrigge, a knight of Edward III, during the turbulence of the Hundred Years’ War.

It was designed both as a defensive stronghold and a statement of wealth, reflecting the rising status of England’s medieval gentry.

Surrounded by a wide moat, the castle’s imposing silhouette was meant to impress as much as to intimidate.

Although heavily fortified in appearance, Bodiam was likely intended more as a comfortable residence than a true fortress.

The castle changed hands several times during the Wars of the Roses, mirroring the political instability of 15th-century England.

By the Tudor period, Bodiam had begun to decline, as castles lost their military relevance.

In the 17th century, it was deliberately slighted during the English Civil War to prevent its use by Royalist forces.

Left in ruins for centuries, Bodiam became a romantic symbol of England’s medieval past.

Restoration efforts in the 19th and early 20th centuries stabilized the structure while preserving its evocative ruin.

Today, Bodiam Castle is cared for by the National Trust and stands as one of England’s most iconic medieval castles.
