If you are like everyone else you get MacBook Air. If you want to do more open source stuff, you get whatever good laptop (e.g. new Dell XPS 14 or Lenovo...) and install Linux on it. Linux got very good in the last couple years. Out of the box solid experience, I prefer it to MacOS.

It's best to know your use case and budget before buying anything not just computers. Internet browsing or 3D modelling software. Want to spend less than a grand or is 4-5K with budget.

Get an old Lenovo x1 Debian minimal install. Don't auto launch x. Compile dwm. Add dmenu. Just keep adding one thing at a time as you need it. Bubblewrap your apps. .... Thank me later I hear good things about Omarchy and OpenMandriva too
