Thinking we are in a simulation is no different than believing in God, it’s a crutch because the realization that there is absolutely nothing special about us, is more than most people seem willing to handle. They have to believe there is a higher power out there even though all of the evidence is to the contrary.

Same with a simulation, you can’t acknowledge that life just sucks sometimes, maybe longer for some and shorter for others, because acknowledging that this is in fact the only reality that matters, is more than their fragile egos can handle.
