Personally I like the idea of everyone armed, or a lot. They are really hard to control.

Me too but I suspect their no match for a big modern army over the short-term. Over the long-term we know it works, but how many of us want to live as insurgents for 15years? Most people probably would rather just pay taxes for an army.
