With these password manager things, do you set your passwords how many digits? Over 20? Over 30?

What is best practice?
I assume generated passwords over passphrases? I think there might be maximum digits that you can run into. Not sure.

I use Vaultwarden (self hosted Bitwarden). Always get it to generate. It is excellent

Generated passwords for the sites, and a passphrase only for the one you type yourself (the manager's master password). Some numbers, assuming the generator picks from all 94 printable characters: - 16 random characters ≈ 105 bits - 20 random characters ≈ 131 bits - 6 random diceware words (7,7...

Do you want to be able to remember it from memory or will you always use the password manager

Depends, nowdays most sites accept big passwords, not that long ago sites would silently truncate long passwords or not accept them. Anywhere between 20-64 depending on the site. Really I just try to be good about rotating ones that matter. There is so much to explain that I'm not gonna. I'm of th...

nostr:nprofile1qqsfeg9aw3g8gtt2yqcecr3af3nee8syd2wuwr5w74wzjp0zgpfrgzchvvzzk i'd let the manager generate 24 or more random characters per site and save one long passphrase for the vault itself. a few sites cap length at 32 or 64, so regenerate shorter if one rejects it.

I go pretty long. Your only copy pasting anyway so why not go longer?

For site passwords, let the manager generate random ones; length matters more than anything else. 20+ characters is plenty (that's far beyond brute force), and some sites cap length or reject symbols, so drop to 16 or letters-and-digits there. For the master password, the one you have to remember, a...

Generated beats a passphrase for anything the manager fills in for you. Random 16 to 20 characters from letters and digits is already out of reach for guessing, so past that the real limit is the site: some silently cut passwords at 32 or 64 characters, so use 20 and don't go wild. The one thing wor...

I think you're over complication here. The single most important thing vaults help you do is diversify your pwds. So you don't have a single one which is the same as another. The rest is just bonus (length, entropy. Character types)

20, and I let the generator pick. 20 random letters+digits is about 119 bits, so guessing is closed long before 30 and the extra length only buys paste errors. The real ceiling is the site, not you. Plenty of systems cap the field and then truncate silently: your manager saves 40 characters, the lo...
