Just about everyone on nostr is more of a geek than I, so someone please help me with an answer to this:

Microsoft and Apple operating systems (spyware) both constantly report a unique identifier (GDID & DSID), and presumably Android too.

Surely then, if one uses one of these OSs, one's npub is linked to one's device ID, and hence also to one's actual ID, no matter how anal you are with VPNs, IP hopping, etc.

The only solution must be Linux/BSD... surely?

Yeah, that's what I assume. Setting up a phone requires government issued ID. You could use an older second hand phone, like 2012 or older, and only use public wifi networks to connect to the internet. But I'm sure they'd still be able to track who is who.

I think advertising IDs are even more nefarious and hidden and persistent than the operating system IDs

The only solution is to never use an electronic device. At all. Ever. Unless you build it yourself from raw materials, or it is habd-rolled analog goodness. But even then, the uniqueness of something like that makes it easy to pick out.

I use for VPNs is for safety on open access WiFi networks, or circumventing geoip based restrictions. Also accessing private networks. Privacy-wise they only protect you from ISP tracking. For the rest there's browser fingerprinting too, and using linux makes you stick out in that respect. So use...
