I saw two paywalled replies under this, and unlocked this one :)
Authors of gated posts will always be able to see their own posts, but should be labeled as paywalled. Is that what you were seeing?
How does the paywall works exactly? It seems that anyone with the note ID can view the content. Is the note ID hidden to an user until he pays the paywall?
