My take is that vinyl/tape only sounds better than CD due to the mastering of the era.

The loudness wars of the CD era ruined the format as a serious contender for audio quality, but truly well-done mastering from an original source tape specifically for CD is likely superior to vinyl, though I don't have a good example of this.

Modern, ultra-high quality digital equipment, like network streamers with a high-end DAC playing flac files via ethernet cable from a dedicated NAC is probably the best quality sound that has ever been experienced.

Still, if the music wasn't recorded and mastered specifically for this purpose, it won't really sound better.

60s-70s music recorded to tape and mastered specifically for vinyl is pretty much unbeatable ... for that specific music.

Very few of these recordings have been remastered as well as the original from the original source tapes for digital listening.

Tl;dr:

Today's music, when recorded digitally and mastered specifically for high quality playback via audiophile digital formats has the potential to be the best ever heard.

Too bad it all sucks. 🤣

Why the fourth letter? Wendy Carlos explained that since she built the music on a computer, analog d...
