I can't stand when people ask what you do for a living just to figure out how much respect you get.

Title goes in, a number comes out, and the whole conversation runs on that setting. Ask me what I'm reading instead. You'd actually find out who you're talking to.

I have never liked asking people this question for the same reason, but I wonder if 50 years ago it was a less uncomfortable of a question when things weren’t so k shaped in the economy and there was a stronger middle class where more people were proud of where they worked.
