I remember talking to a Syrian guy in 2013. Loud & proud Sunni from an area that later supported the CIA-backed takfiris.
He was very proud that when Assad's government asked his father if they could put a highway through his lands, his father said "no", and the government said "oh well" and went away. Ten years later they sent somebody else to ask him, and he agreed on the condition the road be named after him. Wouldn't accept any money for the land.
My government wouldn't "ask", and they certainly wouldn't accept a "no".
Assad's government was the wimpiest and most peaceable in the Middle East. That's why it was sanctioned, terrorised, invaded and replaced with Al Qaeda at great expense to the Western taxpayers...
