Why is bitcoin better than Monero? Wouldn’t the anonymity of it be essentially digital cash based on more sound (non-fiat) financial principles?

Off the top of my head. An open ledger keeps all parties honest. Allows a hard limit to be verified. If the base layer can't be verified then the system can be rigged. Privacy can be built in other layers.
