The United States was never intended to be a godless nation. The intent of the separation of church and state was only that this government should not sanction one CHRISTIAN church over another, the way the monarchies of Europe had done. It was always meant to be one nation, under God, the father of Christ.

I always thought it was to keep out the inevitable corruption that happens to anything the state controls. We should separate religion from state for the same reason press, education, healthcare, money, etc. should be separate: because politics is poison. Government always weaponizes any institution...

This should be pushed back on a little as the founding fathers weren't entirely Christian even then. Though some founders correctly suspected the US couldn't survive if it wasn't a majority protestant nation, the 1st amendment is pretty clear
