He entered Harvard College at age 16 in 1958 as a mathematics prodigy on a scholarship, after skipping two grades in high school. He earned his bachelor's degree in mathematics from Harvard in 1962.
After Harvard, Kaczynski went on to the University of Michigan, where he received his PhD in mathematics. He then briefly served as an assistant professor of mathematics at the University of California, Berkeley (1967), before abruptly resigning in 1969.
