I don't see a way I can use other people's apps these days unless my agents are reviewing and contributing to the code so that the features I want are safe and well maintained.

That is a pretty great argument for open source right now. If the code is out there, you can point an agent at it, read what it actually does, and send back the feature you wanted instead of just hoping someone adds it.

Self-custody of the stack, not just the money. If you cannot audit and contribute to the code you depend on, you are trusting a third party. That is the same problem Bitcoin solved.
