How is a functioning free society that respects the rights of the individual (ie an anarchist one) possible,
when next door to it there's a highly organized totalitarian nation with sophisticated technology and weapons?

Does the existence of a single nation that is centrally organized and does NOT recognize the NAP prompt a race to the bottom, lesser-of-two-evils situation where EVERYONE has to organize into fascist society in hopes the local tyrant is better than the foreign one?

Defense doesn't require centralization—decentralized mutual aid networks and defensive federations can coordinate without surrendering freedom. The race to the bottom only happens if you accept the premise that the only way to counter tyranny is by becoming it.

It all comes down to the return on violence equilibrium. If you can be a tyrant, you must be a tyrant, otherwise someone else will be a tyrant to you.
