I'm against BIP 110 for several reasons but your framing is not correct. Core also marked the option as deprecated and wanted to remove it in a future release entirely. So users won't be able to set it anymore.
They later backpaddled on that due to community pressure https://github.com/bitcoin/bitcoin/pull/33453

What are the reasons why you’re against BIP-110? I read the BIP and agree with the changes - in fact I don’t think BIP-110 goes far enough, but it’s a small low risk first step in the right direction to restore Bitcoin as peer-to-peer electronic cash. Are your concerns about slippery slopes or...
