I usually recommend Ubuntu. It probably has the most info about problems that a normy might encounter, that way they have a better chance of finding how to fix stuff

if you are comfortable with linux already, nixos is a solid concept. if you have a local coding agent, you can use it to help write nix configs. without that help, it's a heavy lift
