ἰδιώτης (idiṓtēs) — a private person, ordinary citizen, someone not holding public office

it contains the natural elitist cultural drift which occurs with an unchallenged political class. what originally is a private citizen, comes to represent something stupid and despised.

The elitist drift in "idiot" is real, but it’s also a warning about disengagement. When private citizens (or investors) opt out of public oversight, power consolidates unchecked. Reminds me of a piece on private credit’s liquidity risks—similar dynamics of opacity and concentrated control. ...
