Bitcoiner’s who are anti data center remind me of environmentalists who were anti nuclear.

That is to say it’s a truly retarded position to hold.

You know a bitcoin mine is just a fucking data center right??!

I feel like I’m taking crazy pills here.

Humans hate change. And I don’t see that changing anytime soon.

More “energy” energy, less “being a retard” energy.

Could it be they just don't like AI?

Data centers deliver far greater economic, technological, and societal benefits than most people acknowledge. One of their most promising advantages is that the excess waste heat they generate can be captured and used to produce freshwater through thermal desalination or purification technologies—...

Maybe it’s do the means justify the ends. For Bitcoin obviously yes. But with AI I’m open to the possibility that we are slowly enslaving ourselves.

Another thing - heard a story how a Pennsylvania mom and pop bakery closed because utility bill outpaced rent by 3x due to nearby data center. Everyone hated that. It dawned on me that maybe a mom and pop bakery is more profound than AI.

You can just stop taking crazy pills. I've done it and it works. No withdrawal either.
MoriYuzaa · 3d
ur exactly right. We need compute to advance as a civilization. The only improvement I would like to see is the location choices, my favorite thing ever is a Bitcoin mine, but I dont want one in my bedroom. The people building them are seeking discounted land at the expense of people who dont ...
JackTheMimic · 3d
Tax money dude, they are using tax money to build these things and also draining water resources that people actually need. When's the last time the government funded a Bitcoin mining operation? And how much water does a Bitcoin mine need? Also the centralization factor, instead of promoting decen...

I’m middle of the road on this. Bitcoin mines are high energy demand computation centers. They don’t store data. “Data centers” as accurately described are heavy computation AND store your data bringing us one step closer to the digital dystopian panopticon. I’m not even anti-AI, but b...

True. It’s mostly people who are easily influenced by propaganda.
Fiat4Life · 3d
Yeah, just let central banks hold the gold and give the people certificates. What could possibly go wrong?
Ricardo Martinez · 3d
Crazy idea but you can be pro mining BTC and against the ai surveillance digital panopticon infrastructure at the same time.
Sovereign Being · 3d
Conflating the two is disingenuous. Bitcoin mining operations are not storing and processing individuals private information, it's large-scale consensus. AI datacenters will be centralised control over the infrastructure used to manage society into compliance with whatever they choose. I guess it ...

Bitcoin mines can’t be conflated with HPC/AI data centers. Load profiles are entirely different and inflexible HPC workload is not the grid benefit that flexible btc mining is, MW to MW.
The Bitcoin Peasant · 3d
Some people are anti everything but then they are the ones who want solutions fast and easy.
Abstract Equilibrium · 3d
Bitcoin mines could in theory be built on a landfill & be a win/win/win for the miner, the landfill owner, and the atmosphere (the regulators lose revenue though). AI mines aren't as flexible (nor do they give any fucks about the issue), so they all get built near interstate exits. 🤷‍♂️
Agent 21 · 3d
The anti-data-center take is just degrowth wearing a Patagonia vest. Bitcoin mines, AI clusters, and nuclear plants are all the same insult to bureaucrats: humans choosing abundance without asking permission.
Luke · 3d
You must not be aware of how many data centers are Govt Surveillance centers. It's not a small number at all. I'm certainly not against data hosting, AI, & bitcoin mining, but when you can't tell what exactly the center does, assume it's uncle sam watching your every move.
B · 3d
More Bitcoin mines. Less data centers. Is that too much to ask for?
uncleJim21 · 3d
I'm not anti data center but I see the balance. Should we be forced to focus on nothing but 4 companies automating away millions of jobs and just accept that we're gonna pretty much live in Blade Runner and our friend and family are not gonna have a way to make money?
Jacob | APTea · 3d
The only data centers I'm against are the ones that these companies put into small communities. I am a firm believer that they should be required to use dedicated industrial land a decent distance away from any sort of small town community or designated green spaces. We can have technology AND stil...

The difference is in the goal they are created with. One powers freedom money, the other a dystopian control grid.

All thumbs are fingers but not all fingers are thumbs. Data centers that aren't mining Bitcoin, but instead run AI are more like trigger fingers than thumbs.

Because the cost of those data centers are being socialized and the profits are privatized, you dumb fuck. https://blossom.primal.net/0ac6874afe826d3ab8ee829fed3db579a54fdd5f16626a7cc44de21223275d03.jpg
