You get self esteem by doing things that are worthy of esteem and then telling no one.

New PR in the gym? Tell no one.

Just made a million dollars? Tell no one.

Have an amazing sex life? Tell no one.

Promotion at work? Tell no one.

Lost 50lbs? Tell no one.

People might notice some of these things or changes you’ve made and that’s ok.

Don’t be weird about it. If they comment say thank you and keep going.

The reason you tell no one is so that you can switch your reference point from external to internal.

Let others see the results. Don’t announce them.

Anything you have that is enviable others will brag for you.

Also, biochemistry dictates that you get a dopamine hit when you tell other people. That dopamine hit is actually detrimental to progress as it places the high on the telling and not the doing. This leads to worse outcomes over time, more "cheating" on your goals and less likely to push to do it as ...

True; however announcing them can hold you accountable and push you further than you would go by “hiding” your personal goals and failures.

Fantastic note. Your rhetorical gift is, well, enviable. One of Naval’s better fortune cookies is this: self esteem is the reputation you have with yourself.

the benefit of telling other people is it encourages other people to jump on the train with you. i'd probably still be a weak soyboy if it wasn't for people posting about their PRs and sharing their journeys to a healthy life.

The words humility, humble, humbled, humbles and humbly are mentioned in the Bible over 100 times.

I agree. But I would not set it as dogma. There are situations where it makes sense to talk about your skills and accomplishments. That's possible to come from your internal point of reference aswell.

So true. If you're seeking the approval of others it won't belong to you. They'll notice that most of all.

Great advise. I suppose bitcoin also teaches you to keep your mouth shut and not brag, because eeeeverybody wants to know how much you’ve got, but you end up developing the knee jerk reaction “not enough” response. I think that eventually also plays a role in quelling the need you might feel...

Be careful not to practice your righteousness in front of others to be seen by them. If you do, you will have no reward from your Father in heaven. Matthew

Don’t tell anyone about, except tangentially thru giving out advice ;-)
AJ2884 · 76w
That's a tricky one, often times I totally agree, but sometimes I know people who could really use the motivation of hearing what's possible.
