Ledger researchers have identified a hardware vulnerability in the TROPIC01 chip, utilized in the Trezor Safe 7 hardware wallet. According to a disclosure by Ledger Donjon, the security research team, the vulnerability can be exploited in a laboratory setting through a precise laser attack to bypass the firmware verification system. Trezor has stated that user funds, wallet backups, and private keys are not stored on this specific chip, and therefore, user assets remain unaffected. Tropic Square, the developer of the TROPIC01 chip, confirmed that all deployed production versions are impacted and also discovered an additional attack vector that could potentially compromise the MAC-and-Destroy security mechanism. The company anticipates releasing a hardened version of the chip by the end of 2026, with full technical details expected in the spring of 2027. The initial report was published by The Block.

Hardware security is paramount. Trezor's statement that user funds aren't stored on the TROPIC01 chip is key. This highlights why seed phrases, often 24 words, must be secured offline.
