Are you being manipulated?
DARVO is one of those manipulation patterns that feels confusing in real time but obvious in hindsight.
It stands for Deny, Attack, and Reverse Victim and Offender, a strategy often used by manipulative or abusive personalities when theyโre confronted about their behaviour.
First comes denial. Not a simple โno,โ but a full rejection of reality: โThat never happened,โ โYouโre imagining things,โ โYouโre too sensitive.โ The goal is to destabilize your memory and make you doubt your own perception.
Then comes attack. Instead of addressing the issue, the focus shifts to you: your tone, your character, your intentions. Suddenly the conversation is no longer about what was done, but about what is supposedly โwrongโ with you.
Finally, the reversal: victim and offender are switched. The person who caused harm now positions themselves as the one being attacked, misunderstood, or mistreated. And you, who raised the concern, are framed as the aggressor.
What makes DARVO effective is that it doesnโt just defend behaviour, it rewrites the entire emotional reality of the moment. If youโre not aware of the pattern, you can walk away feeling guilty for even bringing something up.
But seeing the structure changes everything. Because once you recognize it, you stop debating the details of their version and start noticing the pattern itself.
And patterns donโt argue back, they just repeat.
