Whiskey flavour depends not only on the grain, how it was ground and roasted, the yeast used to ferment it, and the temperature it was fermented at, but also the characteristics of the still it was distilled in. Companies expanding production or replacing still-heads go to great lengths to replicated the original, right down to dents from mishandling.

Cheap blended whiskeys are replaceable, of course, but so are cheap blended wines.

(I had a job in a building that was a former distillery, and I read way too much of the history of the place while standing around waiting for meetings lol)

You could tell the difference in grain flavor from one farm to another and year to year before roasting or grinding?
