So many people were using that relay for so many things that it was a gigantic monster to maintain, but it earned him no income and caused Nostr to be too centralized.

Yeah. This is one of the reasons that while I hope for nostrs success, I don't think it will succeed. I think that if it takes off, it will have the same issue as email. Only mega corps will want to run it for free, mining all your data. They will add actually good spam filters and content moderation so all other relays will be so full of spam that nobody will want to use them (if 90% of content is in 5 heavily moderated relays, while the rest is full of spam and CP, literally nobody will use those). Then all other relays will be marked as spam by default. Then only allowed to use their relays from their client. And we are back at where we started

I think Nostr will succeed to the degree that it remains a relatively niche protocol and platform, preventing many of the issues that come from scale.
