Watching the kids rip wheelies down the street on e-bikes gives me two feelings at once, and I can't fully sort them out.

Part of me loves it. Kids are outside, loud and together, and nobody's stuck in a dark bedroom staring at a screen. That's a win in my book.

The other part of me is standing there thinking slow down, you're about to eat pavement or get hit. And I don't totally know where that comes from.

Then I remember being twelve with pegs on my bike, hopping every curb in town, 50-50 grinding the waxed curbs through parking lots until some manager came out yelling at us. I'm pretty sure a guy on his porch was having this exact thought about me.

Maybe that's just what happens when you go from being the ruckus to watching it.

Anybody else catch themselves turning into the guy on the porch?

I used to live outside. Used to disappear on my bike, doing all manners of stupid crap for over half a day, until it got dark. And now I'm the one having these exact same thoughts about the kids out there engaged in the same kind of nonsense I was.

There’s a significant difference though. We started with tricycles, then training wheels then 2 wheels learning about balance, speed and cheese graters before moving onto mini bikes and motorcycles. These kids are starting on motor vehicles without having developed any sense of risk. But it’s no...

Becoming the guy on the porch but more from the perspective of a former sponsored skater: “my skateboard couldn’t do 60 mph and it nearly killed me, these kids are fucking mental and will absolutely die”.
