Are they ad-dependent, though? If they charged $10 per month for Gmail, that would replace it all. Granted, not everyone would pay. But IMHO it's just that advertising is how they've currently chosen to monetize their integrated surveillance system.

Apple has always had a very close relationship with Google. Google paid them Billions so that Apple wouldn't design their search engine and would instead make Google the default search engine for iPhones.
