trying to steelman the tiktok ban: if US intelligence could prove it was being used as a propaganda tool and a way to increase mental instability, is it the role of government to protect its people beyond physical borders? seems more of their energy could be put towards the physical health of its citizens if that were the case.

I think the government wants to appear like they are helping but ultimately want to maintain control over our young people's mental states and decision making.

The state isn't interested in protecting its citizens

Steel-manning government action takes tons of steel.

I think the concern is more surveillance. Company I work for is a target for nation state actors and they are also banning tiktok

other than words, what evidence do you have that the empowerment of the people is a priority for the U.S. government?

if it was about tiktok, the ban would explicitly target tiktok.

Itโ€™s being banned because it takes market share from US tech companies doing the same things, pushing propaganda, inciting rage, and turning people into compliant citizens. Nothing new going on because of TikTok. Canโ€™t have tech companies and their cronies lose money

More of their energy should be put towards (improved, adaptive, modern) education as TikTok is not the real threatโ€ฆ but the usage & influence that it can generate is the new wider type of threat new generations should learn to handle. โ€ฆUnless thatโ€™s what theyโ€™re trying to do themselves, bu...

Wouldn't the simplest solution just have been to ban it from app stores? DONE. That's kinda why I don't believe it's for whatever reason they say. You do that and it would naturally die off.

This assumes they care about their citizens ๐Ÿ˜‚

US intelligence agencies already said that the threats they identified with regard to TikTok were hypothetical. Of course, even hypothetical threats are good enough for politicians who already want to ban something. Either way, I have zero faith in the ability of our current elected officials to acc...
