The United States has sanctioned two Iranian maritime entities for allegedly receiving #Bitcoin, Tether, and Yuan in connection with the passage of commercial ships through the Strait of Hormuz.

Iran has sovereign rights over its territorial waters (12 miles from the coast) and economic and regulatory rights over 12 miles beyond that, and can block traffic if it is detrimental to national resources. This is in a situation where the Strait of Hormuz is 23 miles wide.

As a result, any unilateral judgment or action by the United States regarding financial mechanisms related to this region is controversial from the perspective of many lawyers and analysts.

But the more important part of the news is the role of #Bitcoin. The use of #Bitcoin in such transactions shows that #Bitcoin is gradually transforming from an investment asset to an international settlement tool; a tool that can also be used in conditions of banking restrictions.

In our view, the adoption of #Bitcoin as a modern, decentralized monetary technology is a significant move in itself. More important than the news itself is the fact that #Bitcoin is increasingly entering the real layers of the global economy and trade.

Sanctions don't work. This case provides another concrete signal that Bitcoin’s utility increasingly extends beyond investment and savings into international economic settlement.
