quasiparticles and fractional statistics are the biggest mind fuck in physics. It’s the tip of the iceberg of just how little we know about different phases of matter and their properties. It’s not just bosons (light, things that overlap) and fermions (your table, things that don’t overlap). You can have something in between. I’m shocked there is already a working(?) system that is leveraging topological order.
