@nprofile1q... That's my memories as well. Before GPUs, getting to 50+ was extremely hard. And 60 as sort of the mainstream I never heard before flatscreens which made that the standard.

Which means that PC brah I read reecently boasting his "60FPS at 800x600 in UT99 in software mode" wasn't just talking crap, but likely also was too young to know the shit he's boasting about.
