Ranting here because I can't really say this on Facebook.
I hate it when my brother yells at my 6-year-old nephew or calls him "abnormal."
My nephew was diagnosed with ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder), a neurodevelopmental condition that affects how a person communicates, interacts with others, and experiences the world. It doesn't make him "abnormal," broken, or any less deserving of love, patience, and understanding.
It breaks my heart every time I hear hurtful words directed at such a sweet little boy.
No one understands my nephew better than I do. As someone who is a PWD, I know what it feels like to be judged, excluded, or made to feel like you don't belong.
As much as possible, I never want my nephew to feel unwanted or rejected. Sadly, it's his own uncle who makes him feel that way.
To everyone, please be kind to people with physical, developmental, or mental disabilities. They're already navigating challenges that many of you will never fully understand. The least you can do is treat them with compassion, patience, and respect.
And to parents, please teach your children to do the same. A little kindness can make a world of difference to someone who's simply trying to find their place in it.
Thank you.
