Yes and yes, you will need a yearly maintenance contract also

As an old I have found almost no extended warranty has been worth it ever. 😂✌️

Generators are generally pretty reliable, and there are repair shops that can fix them up like any basic motor in the event of them failing

Very happy with my whe house Kohler generator. I do not have the extended warranty, and havent needed it for the last 10 years. Good luck.

Don’t know much about a kohler standby. Generac is the direction I point people in.

Kohler is the play. Their enclosures are better than Generac’s and they use hydraulic lifters—no valve adjustments every 100 hours. On the warranty: Skip the 'extended' dealer fluff and spend that BTC on a service contract with a local tech instead. A warranty won't help when the grid goes down...

If u are running lots of computers (and why would you not run lots of computers?) -- you need to thing first about your UPS situation, and test your UPSs extensively first with a "portable" generator -- the risk is that you install a fancy whole-home generator and then realize it won't play nice wit...

Maintenance > Warranty. Warranty is just an insurance policy, you’d need to get internal failure rates from Kohler to know if it’s a good deal or just an upsell.

We almost went the route of Kohler/Generac, cost was insane from my perspective. Ended up with a Westinghouse WGen20000TFc instead. 125A lug for service and runs on propane/nat gas/gasoline. All in when bunker is done and all hooked up will be less than just the cost of one of the others. It will no...

It's cool how many people know their generators here.

Strongly recommend Kohler. I’ve had a 14kW generator that runs on natural gas for10 years. It has carried us thru two tornado related outages, multiple thunderstorms and the latest ice storm. Currently has 400+ hours of outage support. Do the Spring & Fall preventative maintenance and it wil...

Went with battery backup since I live in urban area for decibel level. Adding solar in the summer for more redundancy

I don’t own one, but based on recent discussions in my area, they are the go to now over Generac. I can tell you that I know of someone who has owned a Generac for about two years and had been using it for the 5 days straight during the Ice Storm, checked the oil and all was good, and it burned th...

After years of gas powered backup generator, i switched my whole house to a solar + battery. Long term solution that not only keeps house powered in case of power outage but allows me to produce my own energy long term and reduce electricity bills when public network works.

A lot of the models are the same under the cover. In other words, some generac and kohler models might use the same Briggs and Stratton engine, same controller, and same switch gear. An apples to oranges comparison might end up being an apples to apples comparison and ultimately just be about pric...

Generac here. Suicide cord when needed. Remember to lock out the main breaker to OFF before feeding the home 40A dryer outlet. HSL - Help Save a Linemen.

Have had a 30 kW Kohler automatic standby on a building for 17 years. It has run almost flawlessly, including through two hurricanes where power was out for 3 and 8 days. Maintenance has been minimal. It runs on natural gas. Installed a 20 kW Cummins natural gas unit on another building recently. I...

Was literally reading a Generac salesbook less than a half-hour ago, trying to wrap my head around what exactly my practical needs might be. Appreciate you getting this thread going!
