I get it. Empire is my favourite because it adds to Luke and Darth's relationship, expands the Force mythos, has more interesting envionments, and is darker than the original.
That doesnt justify it existing.
It popularised feature films (not just Saturday morning serials) being set in a never ending universe. It was a Capitalist's dream... which is ironic as Lucas ret-conned it as Communist Viet Cong vs The Imperial US Capitalists.
A single film would suffice.
