Interesting analogy. I was just wondering about why we have the community we have here. As eclectic as we all are, the fediverse is strongly united in its unconventional nature. We're an odd bunch. And that is precisely what drove us all here. We're the rainbow-coloured, neurospicy canaries in the coal mine. Which is exhausting. Perpetually having to prudently feel the room (or field, in this analogy), mind your safety, and stay vigilant, takes a toll. So, if I'm honest, while I would like to convince everyone to switch, I'm also afraid to ruin this "field". Whenever we find a "field" to call our home, it's inevitable that some wanker drops by, throws some wealth around, and crowns himself the new sovereign. While mastodon and the fediverse leave much more power in the hands of its users, I'm not convinced the system is entirely immune to this. It's not easy, nor cheap, to run a server, and it's run by humans. Yes, it's many servers, but imagine how tempting one incredibly well-funded, maintained, and marketed server would be to a novice?

So, perhaps to make it feel less inescapable, we should learn to explicitly embrace our nomadic strengths. To trust that we will find each other, and protect our freedom to fuck off fabulously when needed.
