met an 28 year old electrician at an airport bar and he said he just got his first pc. I explained what i did and he was genuinely interested because he had no idea what software was or how it is made. The pc was like a black box to him and there was no conception of how it worked or what programs were.

Fascinating.

That’s so interesting to me because my dad was an electrician and he’s the one who started me on breadboards and programming when I was little

So no PLC work for him then I guess. That's the good stuff.

A year and a half ago I was the electrician. A year and a half later and I’m still like the technician. Black magic

Doesn't he uses a smartphone? We use a phone nowadays for everything but calls 😂 So it would be easier to explain that a PC is just like a phone but it's stationary.

That's so not my experience: I was probably in upper elementary school when my family got our first PC---a Pentium 286 with Dos. I still remember cutting my teeth trying to figure out BASIC programming!

Got a similar impression talking to two early twenty guys last year who seemed to use electronics so perfunctorily that development or engineering received no attention, somewhat like very old people only with higher user skills.

I was fascinated last night when a neighbor, who's in her mid-20s, said something about being excited about going to a wedding later this summer, which will be her first one ever. Youngsters...
