I think the point might be that one can do without necessarily understanding. A savant might be able to do some crazy mental calculations but have no idea the implication of them or how to make them useful in any way. Just as a calculator isn't a mathematician.

No, they aren't guessing. They are being taught by those who can't. The problem with education. Ha ha ha.
