Well done, Mae! Glad you're on the mend xx
I'm afraid most GPs know nothing about the drugs they prescribe beyond the manufacturer's sales material. There's just too much to keep up with, and they work too many hours anyway.
I was once prescribed regular injections of a drug, but insisted on doing my own reading before taking them. Drug was originally developed as industrial water softener, and improves bone density temporarily by killing the cells that repair the regular stress microfractures that daily living causes. If I was in a nursing home and expecting death within six months it might have been a net +, but for an otherwise quite healthy guy in my 30s that was an obvious nope.
I prescribed myself sunlight, vitamin D and more exercise instead; and have only broken one bone since, when I was told I'd be in a wheelchair by 40.
DYOR, people!
