My mom was brought up being told, "Don't hug a crying baby, because you're just teaching them to cry more."

So, I was crying in my crib, and my mom resisting all motherly urges, was letting me be. My dad walked in, asked my mom why she wasn't doing anything, and picked me up. I immediately stopped crying and my mom says she then realized that I just wanted to be loved, and disregarded that bad advice.

YMMV

Every time I took someone else's advice and ignored my maternal instinct, it never went well. Now I just do what comes naturally. And maybe it helps that my son is an angel 😇❤️

My mom has been told the same. I cried for 1 year all night in the kitchen, where they couldn't hear me in their bedroom. This would be the way to learn your child to become independent, she has been told. Germany in the 70s...

Loves these stories. Humans have emotional needs. As adults, we repress them. Children cannot. But they also the skills to communicate those needs. Good for both of you to realize that.
