Nosdag version 0.1.8 is out.

This one fixes a crash when you left the app open with macOS version, but could also happen with other systems. If Nosdag sat in the background for a while, you could switch back to a completely blank window. The system was reclaiming the app's memory and Nosdag never noticed. Now it notices, brings the window back on its own, and tells you what happened.

Also, a small fix to keep limit the amount of memory in use while the app is not in the foreground.

Nosdag Update:

0.1.7 is available for download at nosdag.com

This one is mostly about fixing the logic for puling your replaceable events (follow list, profile info, mutes, bookmarks, some settings). Now, whether you are using Nosdag or any other client everything should be identical and tracked correctly. This was a huge refactor of every replaceable event.

Other fixes:

-Paywalled articles: saving a draft keeps it encrypted instead of saving in clear text

-Cloud Bridge: dropped the pin on your previous note history whether or not the new one actually landed. A bridge that was down or slow could leave you with nothing pinned at all.

-One unreachable relay made a first save impossible.

-Replies and quote reposts now reach notifications and thread views properly, and you can follow a thread past its second level.

New:

-Note history IPFS backups can now include your imported timeline archive as well as the notes you've written in Nosdag, and you pick which halves go in the file. Each option explains what breaks if you leave it out, because they're needed at different moments. The note chain has to be on a machine before you post there, and the archive is usually the bigger half.

-If you have a complete IPFS archive on a machine but were never able to announce it, that can now be repaired. Previously only a run that imported something could announce, so the moment could be missed for good.

-A right-click menu with copy, paste and spelling corrections.

Quick Nosdag update:

A bug that I was working on (the follow/unfollow issue) led to the discovery that other replaceable events ran the same kind of risk. A big refactoring is being done along with pressure testing and it is a lengthy process.

I finally have some free time to finish up so look for new release this weekend.

Replies from people you follow attach to your threads automatically. Replies from strangers wait in Requests until you decide, and what you endorse publishes as a curation signal others can use. That's the Nosdag view, a regular Nostr client still shows everything.

Also in there: long-form articles, encrypted DMs, bookmarks, search, paywalled notes, and an importer for your pre-Nosdag timeline.

It's an Electron app. Linux tested. macOS tested on Apple Silicon but unsigned, so it needs xattr -cr once. Windows completely untested, since I don't own one.

Or clone the repo and run from source on any OS.

There's an anonymous mode: a Tor daemon, a v3 onion service, an IPFS node that dials only over Tor, and onion relays in place of clearnet ones. If the Tor daemon dies, network access is cut. No silent fallback to clearnet.

Already run a tor router or a Whonix-style gateway? Point Nosdag at it instead. One trade-off it tells you up front: without control of that Tor instance it can't publish an onion service, so you can read the network but nobody fetches from your node directly and it also means no one can pin your content on their node.

Payments are Monero, because a tip on a public timeline is a public payment. Monero keeps the amount, the sender and the receiving address off a readable ledger.

The wallet is built into the app to tip a note, or the author directly. It's called the Tip Jar deliberately: it's for tips, not for storing your savings.

Tips are secret by default. You can choose to disclose one on-chain and earn a verified badge on it, but that's permanent and public. You can also point it at your own Monero node.

What it won't do is name who hosts you. Publishing that would map the social hosting graph onto public relays, who pins whom, readable by anyone, forever. So it stays just a count.
