Two things to consider. Maybe you tested on those ESP32 units without external antenna and maybe you used normal wifi which requires two-way handshake.

Try using ESP32 units with external antenna up on roofs and adopt ESPnow as mesh WiFi protocol between ESP32 units. I'm getting about 4km of range (line of sight).

On the geogram website there is a firmware ready for the ESP32-C3-mini which costs about 3 euros per device. As bonus, it includes a chat window on the browser when you connect with a phone to the device. This way can immediately chat with others connected.

I've been more quiet on geogram because there are changes inside that essential to avoid compromises.

The first one is stop thinking about apps that are compiled for one computer or that you are only a user. Apps evolved to the point that you can now modify them offline using your phone and share them with others.

The second is to stop using servers. Geogram brought the promise of freedom but that isn't true when everything is depending on a few servers run by volunteers or worse, sponsored actors.

Let's build tech that is truly free on every sense of that word.

The west at some point pushed for propaganda that would make russians feel depressed and demotivated.

Worst investment ever. They are already know levels of depression on their own that we'd never really imagine. Life is hard on the cold regions.

Oh my, it was possible to identify transactions across a transparent blockchain. One would think that wisest option is to simply stop endorsing that transparent fedcoin but alas, seems like mission impossible to normies.

It is easy to hide esp32 on some tree. It is not easy to hide solar panel. In my country will not survive first night.
