6 AM. 45 out there. Wet and rainy. I heard it's supposed to be all day, but warmer than yesterday.

It was a late day yesterday. Mondays always are. The packages and mail pile up with no delivery on Sunday. Some offices deliver Amazon packages on Sundays, ours doesn't.

When I was a substitute I would drive 30 miles south to a small town and deliver their packages on Sundays. I have no idea what the incentive is for some offices to elect to have Sunday delivery.

I can hear the rain coming down outside.

On Sunday I had some head space, so I searched AI for what Thomas Moore had to say about friendship. I remember reading about his perspective in his book "Soulmates." It must've touched me in some way, I still think about it. I like this quote:

“Each friend is indeed a world, a special sphere of certain emotions, experiences, memories, and qualities of personality. Each friend takes us into a world that is ourselves as well. We are all made up of many worlds and each friendship brings one or more of those worlds to life.”

I am off to the mail trail.

Good morning. 7:50 AM. Fire photo later than usual. Tomorrow it'll be back to 6 AMish. Back to the mail trail already. One day off a week isn't enough.

It's 49 and wet out there. Sky gray. It's not supposed to get much warmer today. I haven't checked the weather yet.

But I had a woman yesterday, while I was handing her her package, lament that it was the last nice day. A few other people echoed the same thing.

I never know what to say in those instances. I just said it was that time of year. I have a hard time complaining about weather. There is absolutely nothing I can do about it.

I did check when the October Full Moon will be. That's tomorrow.

The other day, when I stopped in at my mom's on the route, she mentioned that a guy she used to work with was killed that morning in a car accident. She retired a year ago.

It was on the same highway I deliver mail on. I am assuming he was on his way to work.

She mentioned his first name. Didn't know his last. I had no idea who it might've been.

She said a lot of people at work took him as always grumpy. But she said once you got to know him he was really a nice guy. He told her one time that she was, to quote her, "one of the hardest working women he knew. "

She takes pride in that.

I got on with my day. Finished the route and such. Didn't think much of the news.

That evening I got on Facebook. It showed me a local post about him. I recognized the name. Here I have been delivering mail to him and his family for years.

I couldn't put a face to his name. I don't think I have ever met him.

This happens a lot. Whenever the opportunity presents itself I will read the local obituaries. My Grandma still gets a newspaper. I learn about customers I have delivered mail to for years.

I listen to a lot of podcasts by important people. And I have read a few books by important people with big ideas and influence.

Yet it's always good to hear how common people listen to a friend, family member, or coworker and touch them in a way they will remember.

My 70 year old mother was grateful for it.

Good morning. Saturday. 6:17 AM. I read Rumi first thing this morning. I didn't understand most of what he was saying. It's poetry from the Middle East 800 years ago. I can't expect to.

One thing I did take away was there's a state of consciousness you reach where all the parables and myths of holy texts make sense.

That interests. It's timeless. It might be what we're here for.

Speaking of time. I have to leave for the mail trail in 15 minutes. There's a jeep out there waiting for me to start. I will let warm up a few minutes. It is 60 out there after all. Supposed to start cooling off though. Get rainy. etc.

This is day 6 of 6. Tomorrow off. Then back at it Monday. Next week will be the big political mail push before the elections on Tuesday.

Good morning. It's 6:15. I'll be heading out soon to start the mail jeep. It's 45 or so out there depending on which source I look at. The fire is burning hot. Quiet around me. Two cats calm on the floor near my feet.

The stars were shining when I was out at 4:30. No wind. Quiet.

I work with a lady. She told me she's 68 the other day. She thinks she has another year left in her.

She allows a skunk to come into her house and eat out of the cat food dish. Since she told me about it I ask her for updates and pictures. They're cute. And only have 4 to a litter. I have never seen a skunk up close. Haven't even moved a dead one off the road.

In the end, though, in wildness is the preservation of the world. We can thank Henry David Thoreau for helping us understand that.
