Today, we got a christmas recipe for you from our project team in Argentina! Pan Dulce is a real highlight of the christmas season in Argentina and many other Latin American countries. This sweet, moist yeast cake, also known as “panettone,” is traditionally enjoyed during advent and is an integral part of family celebrations.

Here's the recipe for you:
Ingredients:
• 500g flour
• 100g sugar
• 10g dry yeast
• 1 teaspoon cinnamon
• 1 pinch of salt
• 250ml (plant-based) milk
• 50g margarine
• 100g dried fruit (raisins, apricots, dates)
• 50g nuts (almonds, walnuts, cashews)
• 1 tsp vanilla extract

Preparation:
1. Mix the yeast, sugar, and lukewarm milk in a bowl and let rest for 10 minutes until the mixture foams.
2. Mix the flour, cinnamon, and salt in a large bowl, add the yeast mixture and melted margarine, and knead into a smooth dough.
3. Let the dough rise in a warm place for 1-1.5 hours until it has doubled in size.
4. Roughly chop the dried fruit and nuts and knead into the dough.
5. Place the dough in a greased or parchment-lined pan and let rise for another 30 minutes.
6. Bake at 180°C for approx. 35-40 minutes until the pan dulce is golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped.

✨ The result? A wonderfully fluffy and fruity-sweet pan dulce that is guaranteed to warm hearts! 💚

What does it mean?

In March, our KHW project manager travelled to Mali to visit our health and education projects. Meeting the children, talking to parents and local staff, and seeing the changes on the ground, especially the kids’ smiles, was a powerful reminder of why we do this.

These visits matter. Sitting together with our local partners, we can speak openly, ask questions, and build real trust. Face to face is where true cultural understanding grows, and that’s the best way to make sure we’re responding to actual needs in Mali and in our other project countries.

Finally, our on-site visits also help us monitor the projects better: we see what’s working, what’s not, and can catch problems early instead of reading about them in a report months later.

Our children in Argentina are once again rehearsing their annual Christmas play at the Hogar Germán Frers daycare center. After weeks of practice and festive decorating, they’ll perform the traditional story in front of many familiar faces. One of our team members is spending the season there and witnessing how much joy and meaning this time brings to the kids.

Our picture of the month comes directly from our project in Ecuador again: the PADE day center. During christmas time, they do not only crafts, sing, and laugh together at PADE; the center also fulfills heartfelt wishes for the children.
The boy in the photo is holding his christmas gift, which he received from a sponsor. For many children in our projects, christmas is a very special moment: they feel that they are seen and cared for.

🇪🇨⚡ In one of Quito’s poorest neighbourhoods, PADE (Para dar esperanza, meaning “to give hope”) runs an after-school centre where kids come after class instead of being on the streets: they get homework support, a safe place to just be children, and for many it’s the only warm meal of their day. Beyond food and schoolwork, the children get emotional support, creative workshops and time with teachers and a psychologist. Parents are included in trainings so home becomes safer and more stable too. A small local team has been there for more than ten years and knows the families by name.
