The Stump And The Hump

On our way to Skaftafell, we parked at a pull-off on Skeiðarársandur to admire the mountains under a perfect clear sky.

This is Hvannadalshnjúkur¹, at 2110 m/6921 ft high its summit is the only ultra-prominent peak and the highest point in the country. The glacier surrounding it is the ice cap of Öræfajökull².

Critical Angle Of Repose

It was a day of rainbows; fleeting heavy showers and then bright sun. The air was moist with the promise of more rain.

Creeping up the steep scree slopes, nascent cloud was forming a cap.

Early October, south-eastern #Iceland.

Gleðileg jól!

Happy Christmas to you all, wherever you are, whatever your circumstances, whatever your views and/or religion.
May at least one of your wishes, however small, come true today.
I wish you a peaceful, enjoyable day with plenty of relaxation.
If today is difficult for you, for whatever reason, I'm sending extra love your way. Take care, rest if you can, and be well.

Here's a pretty photo for you, including a lovely rainbow! Eastern #Iceland.

With hey, ho, the wind and the rain
With toss-pots still had drunken heads,
For the rain it raineth every day."

On our way to Fjallabak on a drizzly, miserable day, we passed this stump of a hill in the flood plain of Markarfljót.

The Priest’s Ravine

Prestagil - or Prestagilsfoss - takes its name from a local folk tale that tells of a huge troll woman who lured priests into the ravine and ate them.

With a total drop of 160m (525ft) and the tallest single cascade at 61m (200ft) this is an incredible sight.

The mountain above it is Hraundalsfjall which has a height of 1008m (3307ft) and is between Mjóifjörður and Reyðarfjörður, eastern #Iceland.

Inclusiveness

September 2025: There are lots of rainbow arches and pavements around Iceland, but this has to be my favourite.

The LGBTQ+ pride colours changing to transgender pride and back again at the far end is a clever idea.

The location of many happy marriages, I'm sure, this pavement can be found at Ísafjörður in the Westfjords of #Iceland.

Finally...

We tried to visit these gorgeous waterfalls in October 2016 and in November 2021. Even in a 4WD vehicle we were forced to turn back - safety always comes first. The dirt road to this magical place is hazardous, to say the least, and we were frustrated by the icy conditions.

Not this time.

Klifbrekkufossar, a tiered plunge falls with 7 drops and a total height of 90m/295ft. Mjóifjörður, eastern #Iceland.

Car Shadow

It had been raining steadily, and the swift rivers pouring from the glaciers were brown with suspended sediment.

Crossing the road bridge over the irregular gravel beds of Austurfljót¹, Hoffellsjökull in the distance has its summit hidden below a hat of heavy cloud.

The mountain on the left is Viðborðsfjall (529m/1735ft.)

In The Mists

Vatnajökull on a cloudy, drizzly day. Wreathed in fog, the stark contours have another kind of beauty.

Nothing can hide all of the mountains though. We had to approach quite closely to see through the cloud, but it was worth the walk.

October, southern #Iceland.

"Ye elves of hills, brooks, standing lakes and groves,
And ye that on the sands with printless foot
Do chase the ebbing Neptune and do fly him

The sunset is picking out detail in the flanks of the mountain and its cap of cloud. Tufts of withering grass scattered across the black dunes are made golden by the low light.

Climbing into the clouds, we looked back towards the fjord and this beautiful sight.

Shadowplay

Low cloud and patchy sunlight played tag with us all day. Climbing towards Öxi, I caught lovely silhouettes of ridges on the flanks of Dýristindur and Kistufell.

October: Driving through Suðurdalur on our way from Breiðdalsvík to Djúpivogur, eastern #Iceland.
